How To Connect To Eduroam Wifi: Step‑by‑step Guide For Students & Staff

Eduroam (Education Roaming) is a secure global Wireless Fidelity (WIFI) service that allows students, researchers, staff and individuals from participating institutions to access the internet seamlessly across multiple campuses and institutions worldwide. 

This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to connect to eduroam using different methods.  Whether you choose to use the geteduroam app for a simplified setup or prefer manual configuration, following the appropriate steps for your device ensures a smooth connection experience. Always refer to your institution’s specific guidelines and resources incase your institution made some changes.

Method 1: Connect to eduroam Using the geteduroam App

The geteduroam app simplifies the configuration process by automatically setting up eduroam on your device.

Steps to Connect Using the geteduroam App:

Step 1: Download the geteduroam App
Android Users: Download from the Google Play Store . Visit the google play store and search for geteduroam, download and install the app or click here for direct download.

iPhone Users: Download from the Apple App Store or click here.

Windows Users: Download from the official geteduroam website.

Step 2: Open the App and Select your institution
Forexample; MUBS students Search for “Makerere University Business School” and select it from the institutions list.

Step 3: Authenticate with Your Institution Credentials
In the example case we used, Mubs students enter your MUBS student email address (e.g.yourstudentnumber@mubs.ac.ug). Then enter the password associated with that email

Step 4: Allow the App to Configure Your Device
The app will automatically set up eduroam.

Once done, you should be connected.

 

Method 2: Manually Connecting to eduroam on Different Devices
 

Connecting to eduroam on Android

1. Open WiFi Settings

On your android device, Navigate to its Settings and turn on WiFi. On the list of WiFi networks that appear,select Eduroam.

2. Enter the Following Details:

EAP Method: TTLS

Phase 2 Authentication: PAP

CA Certificate: Dont Validate

Identity: Your institution email (e.g., yourstudentnumber@mubs.ac.ug).

Anonymous Identity: Leave blank.

Password: Enter the password you set for your institution email address.

3. Connect to eduroam

Click Connect, and your device should then be connected to eduroam if you entered the correct credentials and configurations.

Connecting to eduroam on iPhone (iOS)

1. Go to WiFi Settings

   Open Settings > WiFi and select eduroam.

2. Enter Your Institution Credentials

Username: Your Institution email

Password: Your password associated with that email

3. Accept the Security Certificate

If prompted, tap “Trust” to accept the security certificate.

Click Connect  and your iPhone should now be connected to eduroam.

Connecting to eduroam on Windows (PC/Laptop)

1. Go to WiFi Settings

On your windows PC, navigate to wifi settings by clicking on the WiFi icon in the taskbar. Select “Network & Internet settings.”

2. Add a New Network

Click “Set up a new connection or network.”

Select “Manually connect to a wireless network.”

3. Enter Network Details

Network name: ”eduroam

Security type: “WPA2Enterprise

4. Configure Security Settings

Click “Change connection settings.”

Navigate to the Security tab.

Under Choose authentication method, select EAP-TTLS.

Click Settings, then: Uncheck “Enable identity privacy”.

Select PAP as the authentication method.

5. Enter Your Credentials

Username: Your institution email (e.g., studentnumber@mubs.ac.ug).

Password: Enter the password for that Email.

6. Connect to eduroam

Click Connect to finalize the process.

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Check Your Credentials: Always Double-check to ensure you’re using the correct Institution email and password.
  • Also  Double-check to ensure you entered the correct configurations as guided above.
  • Forget the Network and Reconnect: If the connection fails, go to WiFi settings, forget the eduroam network, and try connecting again with the steps above.
  • Contact IT Support: If problems persist, reach out to your institution’s IT Help desk for assistance.
