No single visual mistake or online detector can reliably prove that an image, video or voice recording was generated by AI. The safest method combines source verification, content credentials, reverse search, internal consistency and independent confirmation.
AI media is becoming more convincing, while ordinary editing, compression and poor lighting can make genuine media look artificial. Treat detection as an investigation, not a guessing game.
Start with the source, not the pixels
Before zooming into hands or shadows, determine who first published the media. Ask:
- Is this the original account or a repost?
- Does the account have a credible history?
- Is the same event reported by independent, reputable sources?
- Does the uploader explain when, where and how it was recorded?
- Is the post pressuring you to act immediately, send money or share credentials?
A real photograph can be paired with a false caption. An AI-generated image can also illustrate a true event. Verification must examine both the file and the claim attached to it.
A practical verification workflow
- Pause. Do not forward emotional or urgent media before checking it.
- Find the earliest available source. Reposts remove context and may strip metadata.
- Search for independent coverage. A major event should leave more than one trace.
- Run a reverse image search. Look for older versions, original captions and previous uses.
- Check content credentials. Provenance information may show how a file was created or edited.
- Inspect inconsistencies. Look across the full scene, not only a face.
- Verify the claim outside the media. Contact the person or organization through a trusted channel when consequences are serious.
How to check an image
1. Reverse-search it
Google Lens, Bing Visual Search and other reverse-image tools can locate visually similar copies. Search the full image, then crop distinctive objects, signs or landmarks. Finding the same picture from years earlier disproves a claim that it shows today’s event, even if the image itself is genuine.
2. Inspect the whole scene
- Text that changes spelling or structure across a sign.
- Repeated people, windows, objects or textures.
- Reflections that do not match the scene.
- Jewelry, glasses or clothing that merge into skin.
- Impossible shadows or inconsistent light direction.
- Background geometry that bends unexpectedly.
- Objects whose purpose or structure makes no physical sense.
These are clues, not proof. Modern models can render hands and text well, while panorama stitching and aggressive image compression can create similar defects.
3. Check provenance
The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity develops the C2PA standard used for cryptographically signed content credentials. When present, credentials can describe the device or software involved and later edits.
Missing credentials do not mean a file is fake. Social platforms, screenshots and editing tools may remove them. Valid credentials strengthen provenance, but you must still consider whether the named source is trustworthy.
How to check an AI-generated video
Watch the video at normal speed, then inspect several short sections frame by frame. Pay attention to temporal consistency, because a convincing single frame may break as objects move.
- Lips that drift away from speech.
- Teeth, earrings or glasses that change between frames.
- Hair or fingers that merge with nearby objects.
- Background people appearing or disappearing.
- Lighting that changes without a physical cause.
- Motion that suddenly accelerates, floats or ignores weight.
- Edits positioned exactly where a difficult movement occurs.
Search a clear frame as an image and look for the original video. Check whether the claimed speaker published the same clip through an official channel. For newsworthy events, compare location, weather, clothing and chronology with other verified recordings.
How to identify an AI voice clone
A short voice sample can sound extremely convincing. Audio quality is therefore a weak identity check. Warning signs include unnatural pacing, missing breaths, odd pronunciation, emotional flatness and background noise that changes abruptly, but a skilled clone may avoid all of them.
For an unexpected call requesting money, a password or urgent secrecy:
- End the call without revealing information.
- Contact the person using a number you already trust.
- Ask a private question that cannot be learned from social media.
- Use a family or company verification phrase.
- Confirm payment requests through a second channel.
Caller ID can be spoofed. A familiar number is not enough evidence.
Can AI detectors be trusted?
Use detector scores as one clue, never as a verdict. Detection tools can produce false positives, fail after resizing or compression and become less effective as generation models improve. Results from several detectors are not independent proof when the systems rely on similar signals.
Some model providers add watermarks or detection systems. Google describes SynthID as a system for embedding and identifying watermarks in AI-generated content. Such systems can be valuable when the media comes from a supported generator, but they do not cover every model or every transformation.

- Hands alone: generation quality has improved, and real photographs can capture unusual poses.
- Metadata alone: metadata can be removed or modified.
- A blue check mark: account verification policies vary and accounts can be compromised.
- One detector: every detector has blind spots.
- Your intuition: repeated exposure does not make a person immune to convincing fakes.
- The number of shares: popularity measures reach, not truth.

- Create an out-of-band verification process for payments and account changes.
- Train staff to verify requests, not to become amateur pixel analysts.
- Publish official statements through known channels during a false-media incident.
- Preserve original files and access logs for investigation.
- Use signed media and content credentials where practical.
- Limit public voice and video samples when the exposure creates a specific risk.
- Report impersonation quickly to affected platforms and authorities.
