What is a TIN and Why Do You Need It?

A Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a 10-digit unique number allocated and issued free of charge by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to identify you as a registered taxpayer.

Importance of a TIN:

  • Tax Compliance: It is mandatory for all taxpayers to file returns and pay taxes.
  • Business Registration: Required to register a business with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB).
  • Asset Transactions: Needed for certain transactions involving land, motor vehicles, or stamp duty.
  • Banking: Many financial institutions require it to open corporate accounts.
  • Imports/Exports: Essential for all customs transactions.

    Without a TIN, you cannot effectively engage in formal financial or business transactions in Uganda.

Key Requirements for TIN Application

For Individuals

  • National ID or any other two identifications (Passport, Employees ID or Voter's card, Driver's License, work permit, Village ID, Current bank statements, VISA)
  • Certificate of registration (in case of a business)

For Non-Individuals 

  • Certificate of Incorporation.
  • Company Form 20 

Step-by-Step Guide to Getting a TIN in Uganda

Step 1: Visit the URA Website

  • Go to the official URA website: https://www.ura.go.ug or Click Here
  • On the menu look for Domestic Taxes and under it, look for “Get a TIN”

    In the banner area, there are quick links, Look for Get a TIN

Step 2: Choose Type of Application

  • Select the type of registration:
    • Individual (for citizens, non-citizens, and sole proprietors without formal business registration)
    • Non-Individual (for companies, partnerships, NGOs, etc.)
  • For Individuals, select the "Instant TIN" link, which uses a simplified web-based form.
  • Click the radio button to select “Individual(For Individuals)”
  • Input your NIN
  • Fill the correct details such as title, marital status, etc, The system usually automatically populates the other details from the NIRA Details
  • Select source of income and fill the details
  • Tick the reCaptcha box to verify that you are not a robot and click submit
  • Your TIN will instantly be sent to your phone number and email address you provided
  • You can as well download or print a copy if your TIN Certificate if the process was successful

Troubleshooting & Important Notes

  • TIN is FREE: The service is provided by URA at no charge. Beware of agents who charge excessive fees.
  • If you don't receive your TIN:
    • Check your email's spam folder.
    • Ensure your mobile number and email were entered correctly.
    • If you still have an issue, you can visit the nearest URA office for assistance or contact the URA call centre (Toll Free: 0800 117 000).
